Message from Tehran, Sinking Deep in Debt
According to the ayatollahs, marriage “protects half the religion”. No one says what is the content of the other half.
Today, my cab driver has heated words with a man on his mobile. He is pleading his case and tries to make him understand the situation. After hanging up, he keeps to himself for a while and then he says: “Madame, I have only this taxi to earn a living and my creditor wants to have it confiscated. I married last year. To please our families, we had a big party and I owe my wife her dowry, 200 gold coins. All in all, with the wedding and our new home, I am in debt for several thousands of millions of tomans. I cannot even pay the interest to this lender …”
It is obviously wiser to stay single than try to protect one’s half of the religion, and be in the dark as what is the other half.
